Lloyds Beal Site Services are a pioneer in non-destructive testing (NDT). RopeScan is an electro-magnetic system for detecting imperfections in wire ropes. It was initially developed by the National Coal Board to aid the inspection of locked-coil wire ropes in coal mines.
By detecting distortions to the magnetic field generated by the equipment, RopeScan can guide the examiner to those parts of the rope where there are broken wires or where there is reduced cross-sectional area.
RopeScan has been evaluated by the Health & Safety Executive for use in deep mines. Regular assessments of load-bearing ropes are used to predict failure modes and to extend the working life of ropes.
